Activity description
Late-life depression and anxiety among older adults often arises in the context of medical comorbidities, cognitive impairment, socioeconomic decline, and bereavement. Older adults can experience depression differently so an evaluation will help determine a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Medication optimization in older adults with depression is a complex yet crucial aspect of their care. This activity will explain how to identify anxiety and depression in older adults and discuss prevention interventions and treatment options including their risks and benefits.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, social workers and other health care professionals (HCPs) who care for older adults.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the high prevalence of depression in long-term care facilities and explain why it is not a normal part of aging.
- Identify key risk factors for depression in older adults, such as social isolation, chronic illness, loss of independence, and bereavement.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of depression in nursing home residents, including emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral presentations.
- Characterize the misconception that depression is solely due to a chemical imbalance and explain that it can be effectively treated in older adults.
- Apply strategies to help prevent depression, including promoting enriched environments, fostering social engagement, and encouraging physical activity.
- Explain how non-clinical staff, including caregivers and administrative personnel, can play an important role in recognizing and addressing depression in nursing home residents.
- Create a sense of purpose and meaningful engagement among residents to reduce the risk of depression and improve their quality of life.
