Skilled Nursing Facilities Series: How to De-escalate Behaviors

Activity description

Behavioral and psychological symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, and psychosis are very common among people with dementia. Non-pharmacological interventions are usually the first line of treatment for behaviors associated with dementia. These interventions aim to improve or maintain cognitive function, enable the person to continue daily activities, and address behavioral symptoms. Pharmacological interventions are necessary when nonpharmacological interventions are unsuccessful, and symptoms are severe. If pharmacological intervention is needed, medications may help. This activity will discuss behaviors secondary to dementia and the appropriate pharmacological and non- pharmacological interventions with careful consideration of the risks and benefits of medication treatment.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, social workers and other health care professionals (HCPs) who care for people with dementia.

  • Identify patients at higher risk of developing behavioral outbursts

  • Understand the experience of persons who are struggling with a behavioral outbursts

  • Discuss the rationale behind de-escalation techniques and approaches

  • Recognize when and which medications are used to treat behavioral escalations
