Activity description

Accurate and efficient documentation can improve the ability to diagnose diseases, as well as reduce and possibly prevent medical errors, improving patient outcomes. This lesson will examine various tips, user settings, and workflows that will help to manage a patient’s problems, aid in diagnosis coding, and allow the physician to quickly place the necessary orders. Workflow efficiency tools can optimize charting and improve documentation productivity. Epic has a variety of tools that can decrease the time it takes in writing patient notes. This lesson will review Epic SmartTools to optimize the note-writing experience.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who are interested in learning about the electronic health records system Epic.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss how to efficiently enter diagnoses and place orders.
  • Highlight the importance of keeping an accurate problem list and updating the diagnosis code to be as specific as possible.
  • Examine workflows that will help you easily manage a patient’s problems, aid in diagnosis coding, and allow you to quickly place the necessary orders.
  • Discuss ways to optimize note writing by using SmartTools.
  • Identify features of Epic that can recognize any shorthand or abbreviations to pull data quickly into their Notes and decrease note-taking times.
