Navigating Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation: Clinician and Patient
Activity description
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "33rd Annual National Conference" held October 14-16, 2024, in Bloomington, Minn. It is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, psychologists, physicians, PAs and social workers.
Intestinal failure presents a complex challenge that impacts patients’ lives profoundly, often leading to the consideration of transplantation. However, with advances in medical and surgical care, there are now pathways to manage this condition that may circumvent the need for transplant while emphasizing rehabilitation and quality of life. This activity delves into the intricacies of intestinal failure and the rehabilitation process from the dual perspectives of a transplant surgeon and an individual with this condition. It will explore strategies that enable individuals to optimize health and potentially avoid transplantation, highlighting a person-centered approach to clinical decision-making that respects personal goals and lifestyle preferences.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Analyze clinical pathways in the management of intestinal failure that prioritize rehabilitation and may potentially avoid the need for transplantation.
- Discuss the role of person-centered empowerment and education in managing intestinal failure and how it contributes to making informed treatment decisions, including non-transplant alternatives.
- Describe from a individual’s perspective the journey through intestinal rehabilitation, the emotional and practical challenges encountered and strategies that lead to successful management without transplantation.
