Modern Approaches to Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Activity description 

This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "33rd Annual National Conference" held October 14-16, 2024, in Bloomington, Minn. It is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, psychologists, physicians, PAs and social workers.

This activity will explore the latest advancements in the management and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) drawn from the most recent guidelines and research findings and highlighted in the 2023 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) report. It will cover updated COPD definitions, diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies and the role of novel therapies in reducing inflammation and exacerbations and improving patient outcomes. The significance of inhaled pharmacologic therapy and nonpharmacologic therapy and the potential of newer monoclonal antibody treatments will also be explored.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss key updates from the 2023 GOLD report regarding COPD definitions, diagnosis and management strategies.
  • Describe the effectiveness of novel biologic therapies in managing COPD exacerbations and inflammation.
  • Evaluate the role of inhaled pharmacologic therapy in COPD management and the importance of medication adherence.
