Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in Children and Adolescents
Activity description
The prevalence of MDD in children and adolescents is notable. The most recent data shows that 41.7 percent of adolescents aged 12–17 years received treatment for major depressive episodes throughout 2018, while suicide is among the leading causes of death for children and adolescents with an estimated 2.4 suicide attempts per 100 children ages 14–18. There is a great need for health care providers (HCPs) to adopt a proactive, preventive approach to evaluation and treatment for this population. This activity will present HCPs with a comprehensive overview of MDD and suicidality in children and adolescents, and effective screening tools will be reviewed. The focus of MDD will include subtypes, differential diagnoses, risk factors, protective factors, and the course of illness that may be expected. Aspects of suicidality such as current statistics, risk assessment, and prevention will be discussed. Importantly, treatment modalities will be examined, with an updated overview of effective antidepressant medications and psychological therapies.
