Activity description
Obesity is a complex, chronic, and relapsing disease that affects every aspect of an individual’s life, health and physiology, and is associated with an increased risk for over 250 diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and dementia. In addition, health disparities contribute to a disproportionate burden of disease in marginalized communities. This activity will review the prevalence of obesity in different populations and its role in the development of chronic disease. It will discuss the effects of bias, discrimination, and health disparities on the development and treatment of obesity. Importantly, it will educate participants about the benefits of a multi-modal collaborative treatment approach to mitigate contributing factors to obesity and address challenges in access to care that can influence obesity-related health outcomes in certain communities.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of dietitians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, PAs and other health care professionals that have an interest in learning about the impact of health disparities in obesity.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the role of obesity in the development of chronic disease, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and renal disorders and mental and neurological illnesses.
- Identify the prevalence of obesity among different populations and the multiple factors that influence its development.
- Recognize the effects of bias, discrimination, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the development and treatment of obesity.
- Discuss the contributing factors to health disparities in treatment and access to care and the increased burden of disease among certain communities.

About the presenter
Dr. Shiara Ortiz-Pujols is the Medical Director of the Obesity Medicine Program at Med Express. She completed her undergraduate studies at Yale University. She then went on to receive her MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and MPH at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Her post medical training includes training in surgery, preventive medicine/ population health and obesity medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She continued her studies in obesity medicine as a UHG Clinical Scholar in Obesity Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College under the mentorship of world-renowned obesity physician, Dr. Louis Aronne, and the current director of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, Dr. Rekha Kumar.
She has a strong commitment to person-centered, wholistic care and strives to expand high-quality, evidence based, and culturally competent care to all.
