The Grand Round series will provide clinicians with up-to-date resources and tools to better enhance their clinical knowledge. The activities this month will cover topics surrounding hematology.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians practicing in the primary care setting that have an interest in learning about hematology.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe microcytic anemia, normocytic anemia and macrocytic anemia.
  • Determine the correct diagnostics and labs to order for the evaluation of the three types of anemia in a primary care setting. 
  • Recognize anemia parameters to establish when to refer to hematology.
  • Identify the different degrees of thrombocytopenia and distinguish between real and pseudothrombocytopenia.
  • Discuss the primary and secondary causes of thrombocytopenia.
  • Describe how ITP is diagnosed and managed in different patient populations.
  • Define appropriate testing for thrombocytopenia and how to identify patients who need platelet transfusions.
  • Identify common presenting features of pediatric cancers. 
  • Discuss the general principles of pediatric cancer treatment. 
  • Describe the health care needs of pediatric cancer patients during and after treatment.
  • Describe the epidemiology and diagnosis of sickle cell disease (SCD) and its associated complications.
  • Review the management of SCD by a hematology/SCD expert.
  • Identify the role of primary care in the management of SCD.
  • Discuss acute complications of SCD that require emergent care.
