Activity description
Practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM) is important in today’s health care environment because this model of care offers clinicians a way to enrich quality, provide patient satisfaction, reduce costs and improve outcomes. A common implementation of EBM involves the use of clinical practice algorithms during medical decision-making to encourage optimal care. This widely recognized practice is designed to address the persistent problem of clinical practice variation with the help of actionable information at the point of care. These e-newsletters will enable health care professionals (HCPs) to put new EBM into practice.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners and other HCPs who have an interest in EBM.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Evaluate the role of stool-based tests (fecal immunochemical test, stool DNA) and emerging technologies in colorectal cancer screening, comparing their effectiveness, cost implications and potential to reduce unnecessary colonoscopies
- Analyze the impact of selecting the site of service delivery, including independent physician practices vs hospitals, on cost-effectiveness in physician-administered drugs, considering factors like 340B program influence, potential misuse and patient outcomes
- Assess the potential of low-dose aspirin as a treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), considering its impact on liver fat content, balancing the benefits with the risks of long-term aspirin use and understanding its role within a comprehensive treatment plan for MASLD
- Develop a comprehensive pain management strategy for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) through a multidisciplinary approach, considering the limitations of certain medications, the importance of non-pharmacologic interventions like exercise and sleep hygiene and the risks of off-label pain medications for respiratory health
- Discuss the role of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in managing patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with coronary artery disease, considering the cardiovascular benefits of this class of drugs alongside their potential to reduce the risk of kidney stones and gout compared to other T2DM medications like glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors
- Describe a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of MASLD, including understanding its etiology, the importance of early fibrosis detection, risk factor screening, utilizing vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) as a non-invasive fibrosis assessment tool, establishing referral networks for VCTE testing and incorporating AGILE scores for risk stratification to predict potential complications and optimize patient care
- Examine the role of lung cancer screening based on the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) guidelines, considering the importance of shared decision-making; weighing the risks and benefits of the procedure; and interpreting test results through concepts like predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity, to optimize informed decision-making for patients
- Recognize the potential of bariatric surgery as a cost-effective treatment for T2DM compared to long-term medical management, considering its impact on diabetes remission, medication reduction and cardiovascular health, and understand the different surgical procedures, potential complications and importance of shared decision-making for a well-informed approach

American Board of Internal Medicine
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.0 Medical Knowledge Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) MOC program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
