Posttransplant Diagnostics: From Traditional Monitoring to Molecular Innovations

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "Essentials of Oncology and Transplant Management for the Health Care Team" conference held in Scottsdale, Ariz., April 11-12, 2024.

The timely detection and management of graft rejection, a complication experienced by 10 percent of transplant recipients, is paramount for optimal patient outcomes. This session will provide participants not only with an overview of traditional diagnostic tests and indicators of graft rejection, but also with an updated summary of the innovative molecular diagnostics emerging as effective and potentially minimally invasive (i.e., urine testing) monitors of graft rejection, including cell-free DNA (cfDNA) assays, gene expression profiling and next-generation sequencing.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, coders, dietitians, dietetic technicians, managed care nurses, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, transplant coordinators and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate current diagnostic techniques for monitoring posttransplant graft rejection.
  • Analyze emerging molecular tests and other diagnostic tools for graft-rejection monitoring, including cfDNA assays, gene expression profiling, next-generation sequencing and other advanced “omics” technologies.
  • Recognize considerations and challenges associated with the utilization of advanced diagnostics as part of a personalized approach to transplant medicine and identify the value of minimally invasive techniques for graft-rejection monitoring.
