Substance use disorder: An introduction for behavioral care providers
Activity description
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental health condition in which a person has a problematic pattern of substance use. Individuals who struggle with substance use can also struggle with one or more mental health disorders. Psychoeducation can help a person recognize the relationship between substance use and mental health, the risk factors of each that may overlap and how treating both conditions simultaneously can be most effective. This on-demand e-module is designed to increase behavioral care providers’ knowledge about the prevalence of SUD in the US, relevant terminology and the clinical application of psychoeducation as an intervention.
It is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, PAs, psychologists and social workers.
Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain SUD and understand its terminology.
- Describe how to assess for SUDs and identify co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
- Recognize risk factors for SUDs and the importance of SUD assessment.
- Examine how to accurately document a clinical assessment and develop an effective treatment plan.

OHE ensures that the content is independent of commercial bias.
The activity faculty and planners have no financial relationships to disclose.
