Medical Care for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness
Activity description
This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "Medical Director and Clinician Leadership Forum 2024" held September 23-24, 2024 in Las Vegas, NV. The Forum was designed for medical directors and other clinical executives/leaders working in the managed health care industry.
Serious mental illness (SMI), including conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression, presents unique challenges in medical care due to the complexity of managing both mental and physical health needs. Persons with SMI have a life expectancy about 25 years less than others, largely due to preventable diseases. This presentation will delve into the challenges and best practices associated with providing comprehensive health care to this vulnerable population. Participants will gain insights into the latest research, innovative treatment strategies and integrated care models that can significantly improve health outcomes for patients with SMIs.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the unique health care needs and challenges faced by individuals with SMI, including the impact of co‐occurring physical health conditions.
- Discuss evidence‐based treatment strategies and interventions for managing SMI, focusing on improving both mental and physical health outcomes.
- Describe newer pharmacologic interventions for managing diabetes and obesity for individuals with SMI.
- Identify integrated care models and collaborative approaches that enhance the coordination and delivery of health care services for individuals with SMI.
