Obesity is a chronic health condition and a leading cause of chronic diseases in adults and children. Lifestyle changes with the use of medication is a nonsurgical management strategy to promote weight loss and lessen the effects of these conditions caused or exacerbated by obesity. This activity will discuss how to effectively assess for obesity and provide nonsurgical management interventions through helping patients commit to lifestyle changes and the use of pharmacotherapies.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other HCPs who have an interest in learning about nonsurgical management of overweight/obesity.

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Realize how to comprehensively and efficiently assess a patient with obesity.
  • Describe the low-carbohydrate/ketogenic eating pattern and its weight-loss and health effects.
  • Summarize the key features of weight-loss medications and how to select them based on patient characteristics.

About the presenter
Dr. Yancy is a board-certified general internist and obesity medicine specialist who is Professor of Medicine at Duke University. He is Medical Director of the Duke Lifestyle and Weight Management Center and Interim Chief of the Duke Division of General Internal Medicine. He has led or collaborated on dozens of clinical research studies, resulting in over 150 scientific publications, primarily on obesity management using the low-carbohydrate diet as well as other nutritional and medical approaches.  Dr. Yancy is a Fellow of The Obesity Society and a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. He has received several awards for his research including two Research Career Development awards from the VA, The Obesity Society’s Ethan Sims Young Investigator Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the Nutrition & Metabolism Society Award for Excellence in Nutrition & Metabolism.
