Osteoporosis can significantly impact an individual’s morbidity, mortality and quality of life due to increased fracture risks caused by decreasing bone density. This educational webcast will focus on the necessary skills to effectively identify, diagnose, and manage osteoporosis, highlighting the latest screening recommendations, diagnostic criteria, and evidence-based treatment strategies. Optimal management approaches and monitoring recommendations that minimize potential adverse effects of therapy will be discussed, and participants will gain enhanced competency in tailoring interventions based on patient characteristics and disease severity.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners and other HCPs who have an interest in learning about osteoporosis.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the screening recommendations for osteoporosis for different populations.
  • Describe the diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis and osteopenia.
  • Formulate evidence-based treatment decisions for osteoporosis based on patient characteristics and severity with an awareness of potential adverse effects of therapy.
  • Explain the monitoring recommendations for patients with osteoporosis.

About the presenter
Neil Braunstein, MD, is the senior medical director of specialty care for clinical performance championing the specialty care pod to deliver clinical value for Optum Health. In his current role, Dr. Braunstein drives a cross-functional team to systematically evaluate medical cost trends and variations in health care utilization, identify opportunities, ideate meaningful solutions, and drive implementation in specialty care across Optum Health regions and businesses. Previously, Dr. Braunstein was the senior medical director of specialty care and pharmacy for Southwest Medical, part of OptumCare. 

Serving Southwest Medical since 2006, Dr. Braunstein’s work in health care as a rheumatologist has been recognized by both his peers and the public. His recent honors include recognition as Top Doctor — 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020 and 2019 (Desert Companion magazine/Nevada Public Radio); Top Doctor — 2019 (Health Care Quarterly); and Top Doctor, Rheumatology — 2016 and 2017 (Las Vegas Seven magazine). In addition to these awards, Dr. Braunstein is currently the vice president of the board of the Rheumatology Association of Nevada. 

For the Optum West region, he has worked in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer directing innovation and worked on specialty care value strategies. He is the national co-chair of the Value and Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Braunstein received his medical training from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
