New Horizons in Sickle Cell Disease Treatment: Clinician and Patient Perspectives

Activity description 

This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "33rd Annual National Conference" held October 14-16, 2024, in Bloomington, Minn. It is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, psychologists, physicians, PAs and social workers.

This activity will provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in sickle cell disease (SCD) treatment, focusing on gene therapy and CRISPR gene editing, pain management and the utilization of stem cell transplantation. It will also highlight recent US Food and Drug Administration approvals of cell-based gene therapies for SCD, these therapies’ mechanisms of action and their clinical impact and address practical considerations for implementing these treatments and patient selection parameters.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the gene therapies approved for SCD, their mechanisms of action and the clinical benefits observed.
  • Discuss the role of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in editing hematopoietic stem cells to increase fetal hemoglobin production, potentially preventing red blood cell sickling.
  • Describe the current landscape of stem cell transplantation for SCD, including the challenges and advancements in patient matching and treatment protocols.
  • Report on the factors influencing the accessibility of these advanced therapies, particularly for populations disproportionately affected by SCD.
