Advances in the Management of Coronary Artery Disease Utilizing CCTA and CAC Scoring
Activity description
This live webcast is designed to provide updated knowledge on the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease (CAD) with a focus on the benefits of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring. It will explore the diagnostic accuracy, patient safety, and clinical outcomes associated with CCTA and compare this approach to traditional functional-stress-testing methods. The utilization of CAC scoring for risk assessment and in the evaluation of low-risk chest pain will be highlighted, and the role of the primary care physician (PCP) in implementing a CCTA-first approach will be discussed.

About the presenter
Dr. Johnston earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He completed his residency and cardiology fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center. Sub-specialty boards include Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology, ARDMS-RPVI and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.
Dr. Johnston was a founding member and served as managing partner of Cardiology Consultants of Texas which grew to be one of the largest cardiovascular groups in the Southwest. He was actively involved in medical education with the medical students rotating from UT Southwestern, residents and cardiology fellows at Baylor University Medical Center serving on the Baylor Medical Education Committee and the Baylor Heart and Vascular Cardiovascular Fellowship review committee. In 1999, he was a lead physician in developing the partnership between the Baylor Health Care System and the staff cardiovascular specialists to create Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Dr Johnston served on the Board of Managers and Medical leadership. During his tenure Baylor Heart and Vascular achieved the #1 ranked hospital in the US for heart failure management.
It was a difficult decision, but in 2012 Dr. Johnston elected to leave his practice at Baylor and join USMD. His goal is to develop a model where the medical specialist and primary care provider work together to manage the patient, avoiding unnecessary formal consults when possible. Better and less costly health care.
Dr Johnston’s current role is Medical Director for Cardiology for WellMed North Texas. He has a special interest in coronary CT angiography and has a Level 3 competency. The goal is to enable the primary care provider to have direct patient access to coronary CT angiography in the evaluation of stable chest pain. This strategy has been proven to result in better patient outcomes at far less cost than the current pathway of functional stress testing. He is working with leadership at UHG-Optum to help medical groups across the United States adopt this strategy.
Since joining USMD, Dr. Johnston has twice been the recipient of Optum’s Values in Action Award for Integrity (2017) and Innovation (2021).
