Mental Health Disorders and Follow-up after Higher Levels of Care
Activity description
This on-demand webcast addresses the current gap between ideal practices (based on current knowledge) and actual practices in how medical practitioners manage patients with behavioral health disorders. Proper diagnosis, timely referrals, and effective treatment plans can aid in bridging the practice gap and improve patient outcomes for those with behavioral health conditions. Learners will gain insight regarding the primary care physician’s (PCP’s) role in behavioral health, how to implement effective referrals, develop skills to implement post-discharge care with timely and effective treatment plans for patients transitioning from higher levels of care back to primary care, provide strategies to combat stigma surrounding behavioral health, and improve coordination of care between PCPs and behavioral health providers. Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures used to evaluate the quality of behavioral health care will also be highlighted.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians, PAs, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers and psychologists who are interested in learning about pertinent topics in behavioral health, including the screening, referral, diagnosis, and treatment for depression, along with the related aspects of Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify the important role PCPs play in screening, assessing, supporting, and treating patients with depression and other behavioral health concerns.
- Classify when and how to refer patients to behavioral health providers based on the severity of their symptoms.
- Implement timely and effective treatment for patients discharging from mental health higher-level-of-care admissions.
- Employ strategies to address stigma and improve coordination of care.
- Identify the HEDIS measures that evaluate the quality of health care including AMM, SAA, FUH, FUM, SSD, SMD, SMC.

About the presenter
Robin Reed, MD, MPH, is a health leader with 15+ years of health experience and seven+ years leadership experience in large care-delivery systems and national managed care. She is a clinical psychiatrist with 15 years of experience of direct care, teaching and quality improvement. She retains academic affiliations, is published in peer-reviewed journals and has served as principal investigator for large clinical-integration-demonstration projects.
Dr. Reed joined Optum in 2019, serving on the national care-engagement team and with a focus on strengthening the medical behavioral integration, value-based care and promoting care advocacy for our most vulnerable members. Prior to joining Optum, she spent most of her career in North Carolina and Arkansas, serving in health system executive leadership roles focused on population health, medical behavioral integration, and clinical care transformation.
She received her undergraduate education at the University of Arkansas, her medical education at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, her residency and fellowship training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Psychiatry, and her master of public health degree at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
