This activity is designed to equip health care professionals (HCPs) with the knowledge and skills necessary to support gender-diverse individuals through a discussion of gender identity, mental health, and the intricacies of letter writing for gender-affirming procedures. This session aims to foster an inclusive health care environment through effective and respectful communication, enhance HCPs’ understanding of mental health challenges, and facilitate access to gender-affirming care through effective letter-writing practices.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in providing affirming and equitable care for LGBTQ+ individuals
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss LGBTQ+ terminology with a focus on gender diversity and the importance of effective and respectful communication with gender-diverse individuals.
- Identify mental health disparities prevalent among the gender-diverse population and signs of gender dysphoria.
- Describe strategies to support gender-diverse individuals before and after gender-affirming surgeries, including psychological, social and medical considerations.
- Recognize the requirements and considerations for writing gender-affirming letters of support, including legal and ethical aspects, to facilitate gender-affirming procedures for their patients.

Social workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credits.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been pre-approved for credits.
