LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency

These materials are only intended for those that attended the live activity held January 23 or 25, 2024.
Enhancing cultural competency in health care is an essential component of addressing health disparities within the LGBTQ+ community. This activity aims to enhance participants’ ability to provide culturally competent and inclusive care to LGBTQ+ individuals with a focus on improving health outcomes and patient-provider relationships. The session will provide an overview of preventive health recommendations and explore inclusive practices in sexual health, mental health screening and transgender care through topic-focused case studies. It will also emphasize practical approaches to care, sensitivity to LGBTQ+ health needs and the importance of an inclusive and welcoming health care environment.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in providing affirming and equitable care for LGBTQ+ individuals
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify the major health disparities affecting the LGBTQ+ community and their impacts on health care access and outcomes.
- Discuss the skills necessary to conduct inclusive and sensitive patient interviews, focusing on mental health disorders, substance use and interpersonal violence.
- Describe inclusive preventive health recommendations and screening practices tailored to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients.
- Recognize specific health considerations in transgender care, including hormone therapies, binding and tucking and the impact of these practices on physical health.

A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been pre-approved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization with which they wish to obtain credit.
