Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Utilizing Personalized Treatments and Addressing Health

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has received recent national media attention. A rare genetic disorder of progressive muscular weakness, DMD typically affects males. Muscle weakness is usually noticeable in early childhood and most children with DMD use a wheelchair by their early teens. Individuals with DMD do not have typical life expectancy. Despite medical advances, survival beyond the third decade is uncommon.  Utilizing personalized treatments and emerging therapy approaches have shown real promise in its treatment, but inequities in health care are contributing to inferior outcomes for some individuals with DMD. This activity will discuss emerging therapies for DMD and the importance of incorporating a personalized interprofessional care plan, along with the role of health disparities and how these impacts access to care and outcomes for these individuals.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, PAs, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other health care professionals (HCPs) who care for individuals with DMD.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe DMD and the interprofessional care that is necessary for optimal outcomes.
  • Explain different emerging therapies and how to incorporate these considerations into a personalized treatment plan.
  • Discuss the prevalence of DMD in different racial and ethnic groups.
  • Address health disparities among individuals with DMD related to their socioeconomic status, residential geographic location and access to DMD centers.
  • Recognize other environmental factors that impact outcomes for individuals with DMD.

About the presenter
Dr. Ann H. Tilton is currently the past president of the Child Neurology Foundation. She has been actively involved with the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Board of Directors, where she served as the vice president of the AAN. Her special interests include neurorehabilitation, neuromuscular disorders and clinical applications and research in novel uses of botulinum toxin and intrathecal baclofen in the care of children and young adults with abnormal tone. One of her priorities is also residency education. Dr. Tilton's interest in children with disabilities extends to the American Academy of Pediatrics where she served on the National Council for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Additionally, she is a director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans and is active in the care of children with muscle and nerve disorders. 
 
Dr. Tilton has been board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with special qualifications in child neurology and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in clinical neurophysiology. She has published on numerous topics and has spoken nationally and internationally on child neurology, rehabilitation and spasticity management.
