The Relationship Between Pain, Stress and Sleep

There is a growing body of research that explores the interrelationships between pain, stress and sleep. This activity will review the interrelationship of pain and sleep on physical activity, stress and behavior, as well as the importance of assessing sleep quality for individuals with pain. Dr. Schubiner will also highlight techniques to reduce stress and improve sleep.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other HCPs who have an interest in the care of individuals with chronic pain.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explore the importance of the biopsychosocial approach to whole person well-being.
  • Understand psychological factors and their impact on pain outcomes.
  • Appraise the reciprocal relationships between pain, stress and sleep as well as the importance of stress management and good sleep hygiene for recovery and improved quality of life.
  • Identify simple, accessible techniques to reduce stress and improve sleep when experiencing pain conditions and exacerbations.

About the presenter
Dr. Howard Schubiner is an internist and director of the Mind Body Medicine Center at Ascension Providence Hospital. He is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Schubiner has authored more than 100 publications in scientific journals and books and lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has consulted for the American Medical Association, the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Mental Health. He has conducted several research studies on mind-body approaches to chronic pain. Dr. Schubiner is the author of three books: Unlearn Your PainUnlearn Your Anxiety and Depression, and Hidden From View, written with Dr. Allan Abbass.
