Activity description
Outpatient joint replacement surgery is considered by many to be safe, convenient and cost effective across an ever-widening array of procedures. This delivery model has the potential to increase patient comfort and satisfaction, while improving efficiency and reducing health care costs.
These monthly activities will review best practices for outpatient joint replacement protocols and procedures. They will focus on a model that enables improved access to high-quality care at lower costs with the goals of improving surgical care, mitigating risks and barriers to enable rapid discharge, and achieving high-quality patient outcomes.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of anesthesiologists, PAs and physicians who have an interest in outpatient surgical care.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the use of multimodal analgesia pain management following total hip arthroplasty.
- Describe the clinical impact of routine complete blood counts following a total knee arthroplasty.
- State the role of transdermal scopolamine as an adjunct to multimodal pain management in individuals undergoing total joint arthroplasty.
- Analyze the effect of adductor canal block on acute perioperative pain and function in total knee arthroplasty.
- Examine the use of cannabis and its effect on outcomes following a total knee arthroplasty.
Program
This one-hour live activity will be held Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, starting at 6:30 a.m. EST at the Surgical Center of Greensboro. This month's topic is "Journal Club: from Journal of Arthroplasty."

About the presenter
Dr. Olin joined Greensboro Orthopaedics in 2004. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, with fellowship training in complex total hip and knee joint replacement surgery. He provides treatment for degenerative conditions of the hip and knee joints.
Dr. Olin completed the Otto E. Aufranc Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Mass. During his year-long fellowship, he participated in a large volume of primary and complex revision joint replacement surgeries. Furthermore, his training focused on advanced surgical techniques in hip and knee replacement in addition to working with alternative bearing surfaces.
He has extensive experience performing direct anterior approach total hip replacement surgery since 2011. This surgical technique offers a patient less pain and scarring as well as an anticipated shorter recovery time. Furthermore, Dr. Olin has been certified and master course trained for the BioMet Oxford Partial Knee Replacement since its introduction to the U.S. in 2004.
Providing care of the highest quality is the central focus of Dr. Olin’s approach to practicing medicine. He strives to educate patients about their condition and treatment options to allow them to make informed decisions about their care. He prides himself in building positive relationships with his patients. Dr. Olin values being able to serve his patients and assisting them in returning to an active lifestyle.
