Maternal Mental Health/Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome

This on-demand webcast will provide a comprehensive exploration of perinatal mental health with the goal of improving clinical outcomes for mothers and their children. It will focus on the identification and management of common perinatal mental disorders, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) while emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention and offer strategies for screening and support. Additionally, neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) will be highlighted, along with traditional and emerging treatment approaches. This on-demand webcast will provide a comprehensive exploration of perinatal mental health with the goal of improving clinical outcomes for mothers and their children. Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in maternal mental health and NOWS. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify common perinatal mental disorders, PMADs and SUDs and review their impact on maternal and child health outcomes. 
  • Discuss the consequences of untreated maternal mental health issues, approaches to screening and effective intervention strategies.
  • Describe the clinical manifestations of NAS and NOWS and detail pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options.
  • Compare and contrast management approaches to NAS, including the eat, sleep and console (ESC) model of care, Finnegan scoring and morphine treatment, and explain their effectiveness and impact on clinical outcomes.
