Activity description

Motivational interviewing can improve patient outcomes when integrated into clinician-patient interactions during the diagnosis and management of addiction, chronic disease and other physical and mental health concerns. This activity will provide a comprehensive understanding of motivational interviewing, the stages of change to expect with the interviewing process and its role in improving patient outcomes. A specific focus on strategies to develop and enhance interview techniques will help participants to engage better with patients and achieve long-term success in implementing positive health changes.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, social workers and other HCPs who have an interest in learning about motivational interviewing.

  • Develop an understanding of the process of motivational interviewing and how it impacts their professional environment.
  • Discuss motivational interviewing techniques that will be beneficial to assist patients in achieving their goals. 
  • Classify circumstances where motivational interviewing may be the best approach. 
  • Differentiate the stages of change with motivational interviewing.

Credit designation statements

Case managers
The Commission for Case Manager Certification has approved this program for a maximum of 0.75 clock hours for Certified Case Managers (CCM).

Nurses
The participant will be awarded up to 0.75 contact hour(s) of credit for attendance and completion of supplemental materials.

Social workers
ACE LogoAs a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 0.75 enduring continuing education credits.

Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
