Lethal Means Safety: A Critical Focus in Suicide Prevention
Activity description
Firearms are the most common means used in suicide, making lethal means safety a critical focus in suicide prevention. Lethal means safety is an evidence-based intervention aimed at increasing the time and space between the onset of suicidal thoughts and access to firearms and other lethal means during moments of crisis. This on-demand webcast offers actionable strategies and techniques to help participants engage in conversations about voluntary secure storage, which plays an important role in reducing suicide risk and saving lives.
It is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists/pharmacy technicians, physicians, PAs, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other health care professionals (HCPs) who have an interest in the importance of addressing lethal means safety in suicide prevention.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the importance of addressing lethal means safety in suicide prevention.
- Identify potential strategies to improve the secure storage of firearms.
- Describe effective communication strategies to engage in conversations about the voluntary secure storage of firearms.

Dr. David Rozek, PhD, ABPP received his PhD from the University of Notre Dame and completed his residency at the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Prior to joining the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dr. Rozek held positions at the University of Central Florida as the Director of the National Center of Excellence for First Responder Behavioral Health at UCF RESTORES and at the University of Utah in the Department of Psychiatry with a secondary appointment as the Director of Training at the National Center for Veterans Studies. Dr. Rozek’s research and clinical expertise are in cognitive and behavioral therapies for suicide, depression, and PTSD. He regularly provides training to clinicians, medical professionals, peers support specialist, and mental health allies on best practices when working with individuals who are at risk for suicide and is an active researcher focusing on how to best improve clinical care.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credits.
Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals. Check with your board to be sure.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits.
