Indolent Systemic Mastocytosis: Clinical Approaches and Management
Activity description
Indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) is a rare and often elusive condition, with symptoms that can easily be mistaken for more common ailments. This live webcast is designed to enhance the participant’s expertise in diagnosing and managing ISM, a condition that often leaves individuals on a prolonged and frustrating journey through the health care system. Due to its non-specific symptoms—such as skin lesions, anemia, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bone pain, and allergy-related issues like itching, hives, and flushing—individuals frequently consult multiple specialists, including allergists, immunologists, dermatologists, and gastroenterologists, without receiving a definitive diagnosis.
This live webcast is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, dietitians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, and PAs.
It may be of special interest to health care professionals in the fields of primary care, dermatology, allergy, hematology/oncology and medical case management.
At the end of this live webcast, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the clinical manifestations and diagnostic criteria specific to ISM.
- Identify the role of molecular testing in ISM diagnosis, including KIT mutation analysis and the significance of emerging biomarker data.
- Evaluate and compare therapeutic approaches for managing ISM symptoms, including traditional treatments and newer, targeted therapies.
- Describe the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in ISM management and review strategies to create comprehensive treatment plans.

About the presenter
As an allergist and immunologist, Andrew White, MD, treats all types of allergic conditions, as well as conditions due to a deficiency of the immune system. He commonly sees patients for asthma, hay fever, eczema, food allergies, skin allergies and hives. He also diagnoses and treats immune deficiencies such as common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and a variety of other conditions that could lead to an increased risk of infection.
In addition, he sees patients for chronic sinusitis (sinus inflammation) and nasal polyposis (nasal polyps). Aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD), also known as Samter’s Syndrome, is another area of focus. He is also interested in vocal cord dysfunction and mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndromes.
Dr. White believes in building a partnership with his patients. He feels that it’s important to listen carefully to the issues that are troubling the patient in order to guide them to the best possible treatment options.
In addition to his clinical practice, he conducts research on aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, a topic on which he has authored multiple publications and ongoing research protocols.
Outside of work, he enjoys going on adventures with his wife and children, mountain biking, reading, and making music.
