This activity is designed to provide health care professionals with the comprehensive knowledge and skills to offer inclusive and effective sexual health care for LGBTQ+ patients. Participants will gain insights into the unique sexual health challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including the disproportionate impact of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, and learn strategies for creating a welcoming and non-judgmental clinical environment. This course will cover essential topics such as inclusive history-taking, STI prevention and counseling and the latest US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for LGBTQ+ populations. Case studies will be used to illustrate best practices and enhance learning.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to provide compassionate, informed and comprehensive care to patients related to inclusive sexual health.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe inclusive sexual history-taking and counseling, along with techniques to create a welcoming environment that fosters open communication and respects patients’ identities.
  • Review evidence-based STI screening and prevention strategies, including current CDC guidelines for screening and prevention. 
  • Discuss additional sexual health considerations and STI care for LGBTQ+ patients, including how to provide appropriate referrals and follow-up care for complex cases that include sexual trauma, trafficking and intimate partner violence.
