
HIV Prevention in Primary Care

This activity will provide a comprehensive overview of practical strategies and best practices for integrating HIV prevention methods into primary care settings. Covering a range of topics, it will review how to take a comprehensive and inclusive sexual health history and assess patient risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The effective use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) will be discussed. This activity will also focus on the importance of ongoing patient monitoring and support and identifying potential candidates for PrEP/nPEP based on risk profiles.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to provide compassionate, informed and comprehensive care to patients related to HIV prevention.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain effective methods for taking an inclusive sexual health history and assessing patient risks for HIV and STI acquisition.
- Discuss approaches to integrate HIV preventive strategies in primary care, including PrEP and nPEP.
- Describe how to identify suitable candidates for PrEP and nPEP based on an evidence-based risk-assessment framework.
- Identify pertinent clinical considerations for PrEP/nPEP management, including side effects, medication interactions and laboratory tests.
