Racial Trauma and Health Equity Across the Lifespan
Activity description
Patients’ physical and mental wellbeing are determined by many aspects of their social and economic experiences, known as social determinants of health (SDOH), which include such factors as health care access, education level, social environment, and income. Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) also strongly influence psychological and physical health, with culturally informed ACE (C-ACE) being identified as a widely experienced psychosocial stressor for many minority patients. This activity focuses on educating health care professionals about the impact of racism and bias on their patients’ SDOH, C-ACE, and short- and long-term mental and physical health outcomes. In addition, risk factors for C-ACE, as well as the important role of managed care in decreasing C-ACE among minority patients, will be discussed.
