Understanding How Eating Disorders Impact Those in the Child Welfare System

Activity description

It is estimated that up to 70% of children in the child welfare system engage in some form of disordered eating. One-third will then experience chronic, long-term eating disorders at great cost to their personal health and relationships and to the health care system at large. Since the experience of childhood trauma greatly increases the risk for eating disorders in young people, understanding the connection between the trauma response and eating disorders is critical to treatment. Few health care professionals (HCPs) have been formally trained to recognize and treat eating disorders in young people, and many children with Medicaid coverage lack access to eating disorder specialists. Thus, there is a strong need to train HCPs to better understand the needs of children with eating disorders to improve the overall approach to mental health in young people.

This activity will discuss the connection between childhood trauma and eating disorders and how to better assess the risk of young people within the child welfare system developing eating disorders. It also will provide HCPs with guidance regarding improved recognition of the underlying conditions and experiences that must be addressed to successfully treat individuals struggling with disordered eating.
