Activity description

This conference provided learners with the latest knowledge and effective practices for optimizing patient and benefit management across a spectrum of critical areas, including novel approaches to cancer diagnosis treatment, management of complex medical conditions such as heart failure and chronic kidney disease, transplantation, integration of mental health care in to treatment strategies, value-based care, and the evolving use of diabetes treatments in patients with obesity.  

It has been designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, coders, dietitians, dietetic technicians, managed care nurses, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, transplant coordinators and other health care professionals.

Learning objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe advancements in lung cancer screening, including low-dose computed tomography and emerging technologies, and their impact on early detection and patient outcomes.
  • Identify the latest gene therapy and CRISPR/Cas9 advancements for sickle cell disease (SCD), their mechanisms and clinical benefits; understand pain management and stem cell transplantation strategies for SCD.
  • Outline recent innovations in chronic kidney disease management, including precision medicine and regenerative therapies, and their implications for slowing disease progression.
  • Evaluate the role of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 receptor agonists in obesity and diabetes management, including their pharmacologic actions as well as benefits for weight reduction and cardiovascular risk mitigation.
  • Discuss methods to enhance patient engagement and address barriers to treatment adherence through empathetic communication, motivational interviewing and personalized care plans.
  • Analyze the efficacy, long-term outcomes and unique toxicities of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies for B-cell malignancies and evaluate innovative strategies to optimize treatment responses.
  • Recognize emerging treatments and updates in the management of osteoporosis and understand the impact of other conditions on bone density, focusing on approaches that minimize the potential adverse effects of therapy. 
  • Describe the multidimensional aspects of frailty in older adults, the importance of geriatric assessments in treatment selection and strategies for managing polypharmacy and personalized care.
  • Identify recent guideline changes for heart failure management, the role of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and the application of novel diagnostic tools in improving patient outcomes.
  • Discuss the 2024 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) report updates on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, including novel therapies and strategies for reducing exacerbations and improving outcomes.
  • Describe strategies for integrating mental health care into chronic illness management, including screening, collaborative care models and evidence-based treatments for depression.
  • Assess the role of gut microbiota in multiple aspects of health, including their influence on stress and various disorders including obesity, eating behaviors and mental and cognitive health; review the potential of probiotics, prebiotics and diet to prevent and treat health conditions and behaviors.

The Commission for Case Manager Certification has approved this program for a maximum of 13.50 clock hours for Certified Case Managers (CCM).

Dietitians 
Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit=One CPEU). 

If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour=1 CPEU). 

RD's and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Performance indicator selection is at the learner's discretion. 

Managed Care Nurses
This activity has been approved for a maximum of 13.50 clock hours for Certified Managed Care Nurse (CMCN) recertification by the American Board of Managed Care Nursing (ABMCN).

Psychologists

Social workers
ACE LogoAs a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive up to 13.50 live continuing education credits.

Transplant coordinators, transplant nurses, procurement transplant coordinators
The American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC) has approved this educational offering for up to 13.50 Category 1 Continuing Education Points for Transplant Certification (CEPTCs).
