New and Innovative Ways to Approach Obesity
Activity description
This activity consists of recorded presentations from the "29th Annual National Conference" held virtually Dec. 2–3, 2020.
The prevalence of obesity in the United States is estimated at 42 percent and has been increasing over the last few decades. Obesity is associated with chronic inflammation and increases the risk for severe illness from COVID-19, as well as many other diseases that can cause premature death, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. Because obesity remains challenging to treat, novel therapies have been developed to address this chronic condition. This session will highlight the health implications associated with obesity, as well as the approved medications and devices for treating it. Emerging therapies for managing obesity will also be discussed.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals who are interested in obesity.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and health implications of obesity in adults and pediatrics.
- Review recently approved medications and devices for treating obesity.
- Discuss emerging therapies for managing obesity in adults and pediatrics.
- Discuss how obesity is a high-risk factor for COVID-19 and other conditions, such as cancer and chronic inflammation.
