Activity description
Planning for discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is an important aspect of the newborn’s hospital stay that begins at admission and continues after discharge. Decisions surrounding neonatal discharge are based on multiple factors and the achievement of developmental milestones. This activity will present a detailed look at the clinical requirements for discharge and the common factors and barriers that influence discharge timing. It will also describe indications and therapeutic options for supportive interventions to help achieve competencies necessary for discharge and recognize the importance of engaging the family in discharge preparedness planning.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in discharge planning.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the common clinical factors that guide neonatal discharge planning decisions.
- Review the Neonatal Resource Services (NRS) guidelines that provide guidance and criteria for discharge planning.
- Describe common clinical barriers that can affect the timing of discharge and therapeutic interventions that can provide neonatal support.
- Identify discharge criteria for newborns as reviewed through audience participation in a question-and-answer session.
