Activity description
There are a variety of risk factors/causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Tobacco smoking is the most common risk factor. COPD is usually associated with an underlying contributing disease; however, not all individuals with symptoms of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and/or asthma have COPD. According to the GOLD, a post-bronchodilator spirometry with an FEV1/FVC < 0.70 is required to make the diagnosis.
Chronic respiratory failure (CRF) is the result of the inability of the respiratory system to either adequately provide oxygen to the body or remove carbon dioxide from the body and is classified as either Type 1 or Type 2 respiratory failure. CRF results in the respiratory system’s inability to effectively maintain gas exchange.
Correctly diagnosing COPD and RF is important for appropriate management to decrease symptoms, reduce the frequency and severity of exacerbations, and to improve health status and exercise capacity.
This on-demand webcast we will discuss common causes of COPD and RF along with how to diagnosis appropriately. We will also describe the diagnostic criteria for Type 1 and Type 2 RF, review acute and chronic RF and their clinical considerations and discuss best management practices. Highlights of key documentation concepts and their application for RF will also be discussed.
