Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder
Activity description
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotions, as well as by impulsivity across a wide range of situations. BPD is often underrecognized and underdiagnosed. This activity will provide an update for clinicians on issues related to the prevalence, diagnosis, recognition, documentation, course, and treatment of BPD. A discussion on the frequency of underdiagnosis BPD in clinical settings, clinically useful approaches to improve detection, how to educate patients surrounding the treatment approaches such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and the impact it has on patients when diagnosed with BPD will also be highlighted.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers and other HCPs who have an interest in learning about BPD.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the frequency of BPD in the clinical settings and how often it is underrecognized and underdiagnosed.
- Identify screening tools to improve the recognition of BPD.
- Discuss studies on the longitudinal course of BPD and the treatments that have empirical support.
- Recognize how patients are impacted when given the diagnosis of BPD.

About the presenter
Mark Zimmerman, MD is board certified in psychiatry and is professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is chief of psychiatry at South County Psychiatry and principal investigator of the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project. The goal of the MIDAS project has been to integrate research methodology into routine clinical practice in order to improve clinical practice. Dr. Zimmerman received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, and his medical degree from Chicago Medical School. He completed his postgraduate training at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and held an academic appointment as assistant professor at the same time he was a resident in psychiatry. Dr. Zimmerman is the author of more than 450 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, and serves on the editorial board of 10 journals. He is the associate editor of the Journal of Personality Disorders, and he was the section editor for the DSM-5-TR personality disorders chapter. Dr. Zimmerman has developed several measures of psychiatric disorders for use in clinical practice. He is the author of the widely utilized Interview Guide to Diagnose DSM-5 Psychiatric Disorders and the Mental Status Examination which was recently revised for DSM-5-TR.

Social workers
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, Optum Health Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Optum Health Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.00 enduring continuing education credits.
Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals. Check with your board to be sure.
Attendance
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
