Atrial Fibrillation and Secondary Hypercoagulable State

Activity description

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an approximate fivefold increase of ischemic stroke, causing about 1 in 7 strokes. Strokes caused by AF tend to be more severe than strokes from other causes. In 2019, AF was mentioned in 183,321 U.S. death certificates. It is estimated that by 2030, 12.1 million people in the U.S. will have AF.

Most individuals with AF/atrial flutter have a secondary prothrombotic or hypercoagulable state, primarily due to the presence of AF/atrial flutter. The exceptions are a very small percentage of individuals without any known risk factors and those with a CHA2DS2-VASc score of zero.
