This activity will provide education about the history and influence of gender diversity on mental health and neurodevelopmental issues and will examine the existing disparities in the health care setting. Existing standards and regulations in gender-diverse services within the health care environment will be discussed, along with current trends and outcomes. Participants will learn how to best address the needs that exist in caring for gender-diverse individuals and how to provide them with respectful, competent care that can improve outcomes.

This activity will provide education about predictive indicators of suicide risk, and how to best evaluate individuals for these risks and stressors. The history and incidence of suicide, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts will be examined, along with the prevalence of suicidality among certain populations, including those of differing gender, race, age, and socioeconomic groups. HCPs will identify interventional treatments that address suicide’s risk factors and how to incorporate interprofessional cooperation between HCPs and social service programs to intervene on behalf of patients who are at increased suicidal risk.

Participants in this activity will learn about the system framework theory of decision-making and how System I- and System II-type cognitive processes can best be utilized in the health care setting. The role of heuristics (mental “shortcuts” and rules-of-thumb) will be examined, as well as the types of cognitive biases (inherent and often unconscious systematic errors in thinking) that most commonly result in negative health outcomes. Debiasing strategies to address these negative influences on rational and optimal decision-making that are applicable to the self and the health care team will be explored.

This activity will examine the mental health effects of climate change and climate-related events on individuals and provide an overview of the populations more vulnerable to these impacts, including people with mental health issues, chronic health conditions, and those of poorer social determinants of health (SDOH), which include lower socioeconomic status, decreased access to quality health care, poorer environmental conditions, and heightened levels of experienced discrimination and bias. The negative impact of climate change on health disparities and community wellbeing will also be examined. A discussion of strategies that can mitigate the negative mental health effects of climate change, support individual resilience, improve the relationships between patients and their health care professionals, and promote positive outcomes will be discussed.

In this activity, participants will explore the pandemic’s impacts on individuals’ mental health, including the increasing risks for, and prevalence of, stress, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, especially for special populations such as front-line personnel (i.e., health care professionals (HCPs), teachers and funeral directors), children and the millennial and geriatric populations. In addition, participants will review the multifaceted effects of the pandemic on the behavioral health care delivery system, specifically regarding access to care, delivery of services and digital health utilization. The implications for current and future utilization of delivery modalities, such as telehealth, behavioral health coaching and other mental health care management strategies will be discussed, taking into consideration the behavioral health care concerns that have emerged during this transitional time in response to the transforming health care landscape and the population’s evolving mental health care needs.

This activity will provide participants with a better understanding of the prevalence, clinical manifestations, and differential diagnoses for bipolar disorder in children and adolescents and will analyze the common childhood presentations of individuals later diagnosed with bipolar disorder as adults. The expert presenter will also review lessons learned in her own experience treating pediatric patients with bipolar disorder to provide insight into the diagnostic and therapeutic processes that can effectively treat this disorder in affected individuals.
