ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a wide range of strengths and weaknesses. ASD is a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by impaired social interactions, difficulty with verbal and nonverbal communication, rigid routines and repetitive behaviors and limited activities and interests. Individuals with sown syndrome (DS) can also be diagnosed as having ASD.
This activity has been developed to provide an overview of ASD and DS with the goal of developing an understanding of the disorders and promoting optimal outcomes and compassionate care for these individuals and their families. This activity will discuss both the medical and behavioral concerns in individuals with DS and ASD. It will also highlight the importance of a coordinated health care team and educational programs designed for these individuals. The journey of a family experiencing these diagnoses will also be featured.
Learning objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss medical concerns in individuals with DS-ASD.
- Describe what ASD looks like in a child with DS (behavioral phenotype).
- Examine behavioral treatment options for sleep problems and other issues.
- Realize the importance of coordinating care for individuals with DS-ASD.
- Explore the design of educational programs for individuals with DS-ASD.
- Address the journey of a family with both DS and ASD diagnoses.

About the presenter
Julie Grieco, PsyD, is a clinical staff neuropsychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Psychology Assessment Center who has specialized training in the assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders. She routinely conducts neuropsychological evaluations for individuals with a wide variety of developmental and medical concerns, including genetic conditions such as DS as well as ASD. She also served as a psychologist for the MGH Down Syndrome Program, has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on DS and is involved in research projects assessing cognitive outcomes following medical interventions. She is an instructor at Harvard Medical School who provides direct clinical training to interns and post-doctoral fellows studying neuropsychology. Her clinical interests include improving diagnostic accuracy and access to interventions for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders across their lifespans.
